In November 1999, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's
disease. After almost one-year of doctors visits, they finally pinpointed
my problem. I was scared yet relieved at the same time. I knew all along
something was happening to me, and at first I thought I was dying. Though,
every time I went to see a doctor, I was reminded of my young age of twenty-five.
Cancer was the last thing on their minds.
In December 1999, I started my therapy, and was given both chemotherapy
and radiation treatments for seven long months. I experienced fatigue,
nausea, skin irritation, anemia, hair loss, and much more. During my chemotherapy
and radiation treatments, I visited my old high school and talked to students
in all grades about my experience with cancer, my motivation to survive,
and advice about life.
Life is precious, and we all take it for granted once in a while. My experience
with cancer has been life-altering, and I am determined to give back to
the many people fighting cancer, along with educating and creating awareness
to others.
In September 2002, I joined The Terry Fox Foundation team. I have traveled
to schools within the GTA talking to kids of all ages about my life, my
battle, and my strength.
Although my treatments are over, I still continue to visit Sunnybrook
Hospital every few months for tests and check-ups. Every time I step foot
into the cancer centre, my emotions and nervousness resurface. When my
results are in, and the good news is announced, the stress is relieved
from my shoulders. I am so LUCKY! |
